Elif Batuman (New York, 1977) is an American writer and journalist. She graduated from Harvard and received a PhD in comparative literature from the University of Stanford in 2007. She has worked in important international publications including Harper’s and The Guardian. She published the collection of essays The Possessed: Adventures with Russian Books and the People Who Read Them (2010 finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award 2010) and the novel The Idiot (2017, finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize). She received a grant from the Rona Jaffe Foundation and was a resident writer at the Santa Maddalena Foundation. She is currently a columnist at The New York Times and The New Yorker. She lives in New York, where she is writing the second part of her novel.
